THE mystery is over at last.
An animal thought to be a kangaroo or wallaby, which was roaming the streets of Cardiff for the past seven days, has been caught and put down.
But far from being an exotic animal, it was in fact a severely ill and injured fox.
Suffering from mange, the animal had also broken its leg, which explained why many witnesses reported a hopping animal.
The animal was caught yesterday afternoon by the RSPCA, but was later put down after vets said it was too ill to live.
South Wales Police were contacted last Thursday by residents in the Lisvane area of the capital, with reported sightings of a kangaroo on the loose.
Police launched an investigation and for the past few days the animal was spotted by numerous people.
However, after closer examination of photographs of the animal which appeared in the Western Mail, experts declared it to be a fox.
The RSPCA set traps in gardens to catch the fox, and it was finally caught yesterday.
Vets put the sick animal down last night.
