FANS of sci-fi series Doctor Who have flocked to Cardiff for years, keen to visit the shopping centres, monuments and museums featured in the programme.
Tourists from as far afield as America and Australia have even been seen snapping pictures of lampposts believed to have been used in the hugely successful television programme.
Now two publishers from Cardiff want to create a 300-page book featuring each of the Welsh filming locations.
The unofficial guide, which is not being created in association with Doctor Who’s producers, will largely feature pictures of the cast and crew at work and anecdotes from fans about filming.
Sites such as the Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay – used to film the New Earth episode in series two – are expected to feature heavily in the book, and its editors, John Evans and Brian Willis, say they hope it will bring “added enjoyment” to the series.
Mr Evans, who has been a follower of the series for almost 40 years said: “I have always enjoyed spotting the different filming locations – the characters say they are in London, but I can tell they are really at the St David’s shopping centre or somewhere similar in Cardiff or Newport.
“There are often tourists taking pictures of the locations in town, so we decided to create a guide for fans to help them spot the different sites.”
According to the publisher, local knowledge can be of “huge benefit” during location-spotting trips, and without it, fans could be missing out.
Mr Evans, of Stratosphere Books, said: “Knowing where a scene has been filmed and having seen it in the flesh gives it an added ‘something’ – without this it can be easy for a site to be missed.”
Fans of the series often say they try to spot Welsh locations during the series’ three-quarter hour slot on Saturday evenings on BBC1.
Caleb Woodbridge, 22, from Roath in Cardiff, is a fan of both the old and the re-vamped series. He said: “I don’t watch it specifically for the locations, but keeping a look-out for Cardiff scenes adds fun and helps with keeping your ear to the ground about the next area to be used for filming.”
Some fans post messages on online discussion boards such as www.outposts.com, whenever they spot Doctor Who being filmed.
The unofficial filming guide has not yet been named, and will be published in March 2009. Fans of the series can submit pictures and stories to Stratosphere Books for inclusion by contacting Brian Willis at email@example.com
