PREGNANT women have been told not to drink alcohol until their babies are born.
The new Government guidelines come in response to concerns about excessive drinking among the general population.
The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (Nice) has said women must lay off drink, at the very least during the first three months of their pregnancy.
It is a U-turn on their previous advice, which said expectant mothers could drink 1.5 units a day, even though no new medical evidence has been produced to say there are dangers.
Dr Rhona Hughes, a consultant obstetrician, of Nice, said: “We can’t guarantee women that there definitely will not be any harm.”
