THE death of composer Alun Hoddinott touched many worldwide and now his old school is planning to commemorate him as it celebrates its centenary.
The composer, who was 78, was born in Bargoed and went to Gilfach Fargoed Primary School before going on to become a leading figure in the world of music.
Leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council, Harry Andrews, who represents Gilfach and is governor of the composer’s old school, described Mr Hoddinott’s contribution to music as “remarkable.”
He said: “Alan was a former pupil of the school and we are in discussions about how we can involve him in our forthcoming centenary celebrations.
“The remarkable contribution Alan made to the world of music will resonate forever. The people of the county borough of Caerphilly are justifiably proud of his links to their town.”
His music has been performed all over the world from Sir Geraint Evans and Dame Gwyneth Lewis to Mstislav Rostropovich and John Ogdon.
Following his death last week, tributes were received from all over the world for the man whose work was commissioned by leading orchestras.
