Vandals target church for second time in a year

SECURITY around a Valleys church is to be stepped up following two break-ins within a year.

Vandals broke into St Michael’s Church in Tirphil, New Tredegar, and smashed an iconic picture of the Last Supper of Jesus and his disciples.

They also smashed one of the windows and damaged other items by overturning furniture and rummaging through the building.

Police have been called in and are investigating the incident which happened on Tuesday night.

It is the second break-in within a year. Last time vandals ransacked the church in School Street and drank its communion wine.

Local community council Marion Hill said: “This church is the backbone of the community. A lot of people have their funerals there and it would be a shame if it would have to close down because of vandalism.”

Church members are now going to tighten security by installing a new alarm and are asking locals to keep a close eye on the building. Anyone who has information is asked to contact Gwent Police on 01633 838111.
