Snubbed Labour veteran resigns

A VETERAN councillor has resigned from the Labour Party after being deselected for May’s council election.

Derek Games, a Labour Party member for 45 years, will stand as an Independent candidate in Merthyr Tydfil’s Plymouth ward, which he has represented for 29 years.

The chairman of Merthyr’s planning, licensing and rights of way committees was left stunned when he was deselected in a ballot of Plymouth ward Labour Party members in November.

Coun Games told the Echo today: “Experience and knowledge don’t count for anything by the look of it.”

He said resigning from the Labour Party after 45 years was a very difficult decision.

“It’s the only opportunity to put my name forward to represent the people. I love helping people, this has been my life and my family are fully supportive.”
