Gavin and Stacey could be your choice for a Bafta

SITCOM Gavin And Stacey has been nominated for a British Academy Television Award.

The first series of the comedy show will be up for the Programme of the Year award, which is the only TV Bafta voted for by the public.

The romantic comedy set in Barry and Essex will battle it out with Britain’s Got Talent, Strictly Come Dancing and The Apprentice, as well as Andrew Marr’s History Of Modern Britain, and drama adaptation Cranford, which starred Dame Judi Dench.

Nominations for Programme of the Year title were selected by a panel of television experts and the public can now choose their favourite and vote online.

Last year’s winner for the category was Life On Mars.

Anne Marie Flynn, Bafta head of awards, said: “This year’s shortlist reflects not only the great diversity of television which has been enjoyed by the public this year, but also the great quality.”

James Corden who plays Gavin’s best mate Smithy in the series is also up for an award for the best comedy performance.

The winner of the category will be announced at a ceremony at the London Palladium on Sunday, April 20, which will be broadcast on BBC1.
