Cracking line-up of family fun this Easter

EASTER fun hunters can look forward to an egg-stravaganza of family events around South Wales this year.

As Easter, which has come early this year, kicks into full swing, people in search of anything from live music to free water polo can be kept entertained.

The family fun starts at Cardiff Castle on Saturday, where there will be an Easter Treasure Trail, egg decorating workshops and the ancient tradition of egg-rolling in the Castle grounds.

Then Sunday and Monday will see professional swordsman Mark Vance take his Armour School class of 2008 through its paces with armour and helmets to try on, before children will have the opportunity to design their own shields and masks at the castle the following Thursday and Friday.

In the Valleys, a cracking range of free Easter activities are planned in leisure centres and swimming pools across Rhondda Cynon Taf.

Their fortnight of fun starts on Good Friday with free swimming and organised pool activities being held until Friday, April 4, including snorkelling, water polo and volleyball.

There’s also free football, squash and netball activities planned for active youngsters.

Similarly Uwic will be holding its annual Easter Dragon Camps at its Cyncoed campus, which children can attend for as little as £23.40 a day.

From noon on Easter Monday, live waterfront music is being held at the bandstand between the Wales Millennium Centre and Pierhead building in Cardiff Bay, followed by a free children’s workshop at the nearby Norwegian Church, from noon until 4pm.

Chocolatiers Thornton’s is auctioning celebrity eggs this year and special editions featuring the likes of David and Victoria Beckham and Lilly Allen are being created to raise money for charity.

But all this fun comes with a serious message from Waste Awareness Wales, which says: “We are asking people to try to reduce the amount of packaging waste their chocolate eggs create so we are advising people to buy eggs with the least packaging or alternatively show off their baking talents.”
