Smokers in the dark over eyesight danger

SMOKERS are being warned that their habit could cost them their sight.

As part of No Smoking Day, which takes place tomorrow, sight charity the Eyecare Trust revealed 90 per cent of smokers are unaware of the link between smoking and eye disease.

This is despite the fact they are twice as likely to suffer from age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts.

Optometrist Frank Moloney from Specsavers in Cardiff said: “It is alarming that such a high number of smokers are unaware of the link between smoking and blindness, especially as people are so aware of the links to lung cancer or heart disease.”
