Oath of allegiance 'not appropriate'

The idea of school children swearing a British oath of allegiance was rejected by Welsh Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones today.

It was suggested by former Attorney General Lord Goldsmith who has called for a new British national day.

As part of a review into citizenship, the peer said ceremonies would “mark that passage from being a student of citizenship to being a citizen in practice”.

Such measures were needed because Britain had become a divided country with a diminished sense of belonging, he said.

But Lord Goldsmith said the ceremonies need not necessarily involve an oath of allegiance to the Queen.

Asked about it at the Assembly Government’s weekly press briefing in Cardiff Bay, Plaid Cymru leader Mr Jones simply said: “I don’t think that’s appropriate myself.”
