Migration to Wales is slowing down

THE mass migration of eastern Europeans to Wales is slowing down, with new figures showing a marked decline in the numbers moving here to work.

In 2004 eight new countries joined the EU, allowing millions of people to travel and work freely across the continent. That change prompted a boom in the number of eastern europeans working in Wales, with a high of 6,875 registering for work in 2006.

But figures for 2007, released by the Home Office yesterday, show a drop in the numbers registering for work, to 5,940. The trend mirrors that for the UK.
