THE QUEEN and the Duke of Edinburgh are to officially open Swansea’s rebuilt leisure centre on March 7, Buckingham Palace announced yesterday.
The Royal visit will be the second time the Queen has officially opened the building. The first time was more than 30 years ago when it was known as the Swansea Leisure Centre.
The royal couple will officially reopen the £32m landmark building as part of a day of activities in the city on March 7. As part of the day the royals will visit Swansea’s St Thomas Primary School and have lunch at the city’s Brangwyn Hall.
Chris Holley, leader of Swansea Council, welcomed the news yesterday.
He said, “We are delighted the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are coming to Swansea. The royal couple can be assured of a very warm welcome from all the people of the city. It is going to be a truly exciting day.
“The LC2 is a landmark building in Swansea that belongs to all our communities. It is great news that the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh have agreed to officially open it, just as they did the former Swansea Leisure Centre in the summer of 1977.”
The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will be travelling to Swansea on the royal train and will be officially received by the Lord Lieutenant of West Glamorgan, Mr Robert Hastie.
