Church youth leader dies in 30ft staircase fall

CHURCH leaders yesterday paid tribute to a man who died after falling down a staircase at a church-run youth centre.

Siôn Ifan Evans, 27, was a youth worker at Coleg y Bala, Gwynedd, and the Presbyterian Church of Wales-run centre’s deputy warden.

He is believed to have fallen about 30 feet.

Mr Evans, originally from Llwyndafydd, near Llandysul, was leading a youth weekend at the centre and is believed to have been carrying an item of equipment upstairs at the time of the accident at 3.25am on Saturday.

He was rushed by ambulance to Wrexham Maelor Hospital where he was pronounced dead soon after arrival.

Presbyterian Church of Wales leaders said Mr Evans was an “exceptional individual” who expressed his faith in all aspects of his life.

General secretary the Rev Ifan Roberts said, “Sion’s talent and skill made him an exceptional individual, a very approachable person, a true professional who was thorough and conscientious in every aspect of his life.”

A spokesman for North Wales Police said Mr Evans’s death was not being treated as suspicious.

The Health and Safety Executive have been informed.
