Stan was always to be seen cycling around city

POPULAR character Stan Rees has died aged 78.

STAN Rees was never happier than when he was cycling to see his relatives and friends.

The active and sprightly bachelor did not spend any time at home and his impromptu visits were always welcomed by those he knew.

Disliking new technology – he never learned to drive and refused to use a mobile phone – the only way people knew he was close by was if they spotted his bike tied up on some railings.

He was a well-known face around Cardiff Central Market, where he had lots of friends. And his painting and decorating skills were much appreciated – he was always busy on his latest project and never accepted any payment for his time.

Born the eighth of 10 siblings in Adamsdown, Cardiff, on June 2, 1929, where he lived all his life, Stan went to Croft and Tredegarville Schools.

After leaving school, he followed his brother Jack into the building profession, initially with D O’Neills, then Swatridges, with his final working years being spent with Merrets.

His decorating skills were still very much in demand right up to his death. The only payment he asked was for his tools and dust sheets to be stored because he could not carry them on his bike. They would be moved on when he started his next project.

A lifelong rugby supporter, he was fiercely loyal to the Cardiff and Welsh rugby teams, travelling around the UK to see them play.

He was a member of the Roath Historical and Paddle Boat societies. He also loved Welsh hymns and enjoyed watching Songs of Praise on a Sunday, singing along to the music.

Stan was a very sociable person and was ready to help out whenever he could. He was seen as the thread that linked together family and friends and was known as the person to talk to if you needed the latest news.

Although he never married, Stan was a family man and was much loved by his brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. He died on December 9, 2007, and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
