Police start talks over FA Cup clash

EXCITED Cardiff City fans are hoping for a trip to Wembley after drawing Championship rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup fifth round.

The high-flying Bluebirds were handed a home tie in round five, which is just two steps short of a semi-final appearance at the new Wembley stadium.

But with a sell-out crowd expected and the possibility of 3,000 fans travelling from the Black Country if Wolves sell their 15 per cent Ninian Park allocation, police officers in South Wales will be on alert.

Trouble has flared at previous clashes between the two clubs, leaving Bluebirds fans banned from the fixture at Wolves’ Molineux ground last January, and doubts still surround the league fixture there in April.

A police spokeswoman told the Echo discussions have already begun between the South Wales force, their West Midlands colleagues and the two clubs.

She said: “Discussions are under way regarding the ticket allocation for this fixture but no decision has yet been made.

“We are experienced in policing high-profile football matches and are putting a plan in place to ensure a successful and trouble-free fixture.”

Cardiff City fans have promised a warm welcome to Ninian Park for their rivals.

Fan of 41 years, Gwyn Davies said: “It should be a hell of a game.

“I don’t think they should ban Wolves fans because they will help create a terrific atmosphere.

“We are both passionate sets of supporters and there is no way the actions of the minority of Wolves fans should affect the enjoyment of the majority.”

Cardiff City Supporters’ Club spokesman Vince Alm added: “Everyone wanted a home draw at this stage.

“Now we have a chance to progress and get a sell-out. We are hoping to get to Wembley and even Europe.”

A Cardiff City spokesman assured the club are not planning to ban Wolves fans from Ninian Park for the February 16 tie, saying: “We want a solution that allows away supporters to attend in a safe environment for all.”
