Confidence-builder is a great success

PEOPLE with learning difficulties have been given help in increasing their confidence and skills at a workshop.

This is Me took place at the Hijinx Theatre for 10 weeks. It was run in collaboration with Cardiff Day Services and supported by Barclays.

Members of the group will receive a copy of a DVD created during the course.

Ben Pettitt-Wade, Hijinx outreach officer, said the course would help participants into the world of work. “Employment is one of the most important factors in adults with learning disabilities gaining independence in their life,” he said. “It was inspiring to see the way in which the group responded.”

Barclays is planning to continue supporting projects which enable people with learning difficulties to develop skills which can be used in the workplace.

Members of the company attended some of the sessions to talk about working in a bank – even improvising a ‘first-day-at-work’ scene to show the group.

Kathy Brown, Barclays community relations manager, said: “We’re delighted to have supported this innovative project.

“Our community investment focuses on using our knowledge and expertise to tackle social issues such as improving financial literacy and helping people get into work.”

Staff from Barclays will also be helping a reception hosted by Rhodri Glyn Thomas – Minister for Culture, at the Senedd tomorrow at 6pm, when the documentary DVD made by the group will be launched.

Potential employers are welcome to attend the reception, contact Ben Pettitt-Wade, Hijinx outreach officer on 029 2030 0331.
