EMERGENCY measures which see prisoners locked up in police stations because of jail overcrowding cost nearly £460 a night.
The Liberal Democrats have obtained government statistics which show it cost £459 to hold an offender in the alternative cells for one night.
The figure was higher than the Government’s own estimate of £385 a night.
Last year 60,953 prisoners were housed in police cells at a total cost of £28m.
