are rail fare hikes justified?

“I think it’s like most things in Britain today, there’s a lot of hidden inflation the Government doesn’t recognise, train prices are a typical example.

“I’ll accept the prices, it’s all part and parcel of the tragedy of living in Britain today.”

Frank Thomas, 88, retired, of Caerphilly.

“I wouldn’t be happy with the rise, especially since I’m planning on using the train to visit family in Birmingham. I don’t think a lot of it, the service isn’t wonderful. We’re paying more and getting less.”

Joyce Lawson, 66, retired, of Bonvilston

“It’s difficult to justify any increase above inflation. It doesn’t make a lot of sense. If they want people to use public transport more if anything it should be decreasing fares to encourage people to make a change.”

Steven Madeley, 46, shopping centre director, of Cowbridge.
