Sculptor dies in Canada

A SCULPTOR originally from Rhymney has died at the age of 86 after a long battle with cancer.

Haydn Davies was born in Rhymney in 1921 but moved to Canada with his family at the age of eight.

Mr Davies was well known for his sculpting work, the father of two’s large wooden and steel sculptures standing in cities across Canada.

His sculptures can be seen outside the Bell Canada Centre in Toronto, the provincial offices in Windsor and the Art Centre in Burlington. The great-grandfather also has work in the permanent collections in the Galleria Nazionale D’Arte Moderna e Contemporenea in Rome, Museo d’Arte Moderna in Venice and the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique in Brussels.

He died in Toronto after a long battle with liver and lung cancer. The artist is survived by his wife of 60 years Eva, sons Bryan and Trevor, and grandchildren and great-grandchild.
