Day of fun and rugby

THE second annual rugby event in memory of a popular New Tredegar schoolgirl will take place next month.

Sophie’s Sevens rugby tournament will take place at the Grove Park in New Tredegar on Sunday, May 4, from 1pm.

Sophie Pearson, of Thomas Street, died at the tragically early age of 12 in November 2006. She had been diagnosed earlier that year with dilated cardiomyopathy, an inflammation of the heart muscles.

Since then, Sophie’s family and friends have raised thousands for the Children’s Heart Unit of Wales in Cardiff, where the Rhymney Comprehensive pupil was treated during her illness.

The first sevens tournament and fun day, held last year, was a huge success, and this year’s promises to be even better.

Teams from all over the Rhymney Valley and beyond are due to enter the rugby tournament. Also included on the day will be a duck race, a coconut stand, face-painting, a barbecue and refreshments.

Entry to the event will cost £1 for adults and 50p for children and OAPs. All the money raised will go towards the Sophie Pearson Community Fund.
