Left exposed

IT MUST appear supremely ironic that Merthyr people who have fought so hard and tenaciously over the past three years for a 500-metre buffer zone around opencast mining schemes will not themselves enjoy this area of protection.

Belatedly, the Welsh Assembly Government now recognises that communities must be taken into account when confronted with the problems of dust, noise, pollution and visual intrusion caused by such operations - hence their recommendation for this measure of protection.

As Ffos-y-Fran progresses, and there are still moves to challenge the decision in the courts, many local residents will be left exposed and subjected to these problems day in, day out, over the next 15 years.
