Keep valuables out of sight in cars

MORE than 1,000 motorists have been warned about keeping items on display in their vehicles.

Gwent Police held an operation recently across the Caerphilly borough to highlight how lapses in security can lead to your car or van being targeted by thieves.

In the past two weeks, officers have made a note of the registration numbers of ‘at risk’ vehicles and the type of items that have been left in plain view of passersby.

The vehicle owner is then sent a letter to let them know of the issue and are offered advice on how to keep your valuables locked up.

Inspector Alan Webber, said: “A large number of motorists have been spotted right across the Caerphilly County Borough area over the last two weeks leaving items on view.

“Despite our continuing reductions in vehicle crime, it is important that motorists remain vigilant with their vehicle security.

“Leaving items on display could catch the eye of opportunist thieves. Even if the value of the item left on view is small, the vehicle repair costs may be significant.

“When we have run this campaign previously, we have had a positive response from the vehicle owners, and we hope that those motorists who have received letters will benefit from the advice they have received.”

Police advise people to always lock the vehicle and close windows properly when leaving it, remove ‘pull-out’ radios, hide away property or items that might attract attention, and use and alarm of immobiliser where possible.
