Diamond celebration

THEY say after many years together you’ll start finishing each other’s sentences, and after 60 years of marriage Harry and Vera Pauling are like two peas in a pod.

On March 29, the couple, of Upper Trelyn, Blackwood, are about to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary.

The lovebirds, who have eight great grandchildren, met while they were both working for the Northern Aluminium Company, Rogerstone.

They courted for a few years before getting engaged, but Harry was called up for the forces and would not marry his sweetheart in case anything happened to him during the war.

He said: “I was against marriages during the war, but thankfully nothing went wrong and, on March 29, 1948, we finally got married.”

The happy couple, both aged 84, married at St David’s Church in Aberdulais, and 60 years on they are still very much in love.

“Like many at that time we had our ups and downs, but we pulled together and have been lucky to spend 60 happy years together,” said Harry.

The couple will be celebrating their diamond anniversary with their family and friends in a party tomorrow night (Friday).
