YOUNGSTERS at a Bargoed school have been continuing their quest to follow the yellow brick road for charity.
St Gwladys Primary’s Year 6 pupils had a tiring morning collecting old copies of the Yellow Pages directory and phone books from local residents and businesses.
Children taking part dressed up in green and yellow clothes to get attention as they trawled through the streets for the old telephone books.
Trolleys provided by Bargoed business CK’s were used to ferry the directories back to the school.
Connor Osland and Kieran Jenkins pushed two of the trolleys. They said: “It was a tough job but we managed to do it.”
Year Six pupil Lauren Taylor said: “A lot of organisation went into the marathon and the person to thank for it all is Mrs Carol Macy, our school’s eco teacher.
“There is a huge amount of yellow pages on the stage now and we collected more than 400 directories on the marathon.”
The directories will now be recycled as part of the Yellow Woods Challenge 2008, with every school taking part eligible to win cash prizes.
The school was joint winner last year of the ‘Community Involvement’ award in the UK finals of the national competition.
Yellow Pages, the Woodland Trust and local authorities across Britain have been doing their bit for recycling through the scheme.
For every pound that Yellow Pages awards to schools for recycling, they will give a matching pound to the Woodland Trust.
The Woodland Trust money will be used to support the charity’s ‘Tree for All’ campaign – a most ambitious children’s tree-planting project, aiming to plant 12 million trees by next year.
The local leg of the Yellow Woods Challenge closes on March 7. For more information about the Challenge, visit www.yellow-woods.co.uk
