KEEP a close eye on the futures of these youngsters – they could soon be working on a cure for the common cold.

Children from primary schools in Merthyr Tydfil have been celebrating their success in science through a national awards scheme.

The British Association for the Advancement of Science has been handing out certificates to budding scientists who have shown a particular interest or aptitude for the subject.

A ceremony was held by the Mid Glamorgan Education Business Partnership at Rhydycar Leisure Centre to celebrate the achievements.

Primary Schools Officer for the partnership, Michelle Common, said: “We encourage schools to run CREST science clubs and it is through these that the children carry out a range of investigations to qualify for their Star Awards.

“To give recognition to the efforts of the children, we organise prestigious award ceremonies and the latest were held during National Science Week 2008.”

Children, their parents, and teachers joined guests at the ceremony and also enjoyed a science show called ‘Forest Friends’ by TPP Theatrical Productions.

Each school attending the ceremony received a science club grant of £75 and a framed certificate.

Sponsors for the awards include Welsh Water, GE Healthcare, Harp International, South Wales Institute of Engineers, and Careers Wales.
