Couple’s golden years

A MISKIN couple have celebrated their golden wedding with an anniversary party and a Mediterranean holiday.

Ron and Dilys Mason, of Edward Street, marked 50 years of marriage with a party at Mountain Ash Workingmen’s Club and a week-long holiday in Palma Nova, Majorca, where they were joined by 30 family and friends.

“We enjoyed both the party and the holiday,” said Ron.

“They were great fun.

“In Palma Nova, we pretty well took over the fourth floor of the hotel!”

Ron, 74, and Dilys, 70, were married at St John’s Church, Miskin, in 1957 and have lived locally all their lives.

They have four sons – Dale, 49, Kevin, 47, Jeff, 44, and Richard, 42 – eight grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Before retiring from Abercynon Colliery in 1986, Ron had worked as a miner for 40 years, while Dilys spent a number of years working as a sewing machinist.

The couple both enjoy gardening, while Ron also spends time wood carving and cycling.

Dilys enjoys line dancing sessions at Abercynon Sports Centre.

Asked what was the secret to a long and happy marriage, Dilys said “I haven’t a clue”, while Ron joked “Perseverance!”
