Coal celebration

A DAY of celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of the nationalisation of the coal industry has been held.

The “For the People” event was held at the Rhondda Heritage Park and organised by the Friends of the Park using a £3,950 grant from the lottery-funded programme Awards for All Wales.

Guest speakers on the day included Professor Dai Smith, Dr Kim Howells MP, Tyrone O’Sullivan of Tower Colliery and Ceri Thompson, curator of The Big Pit National Coal Museum.

The day also included free underground tours, complimentary refreshments, exhibitions, artifacts, archive film, live theatre and art gallery.

Children enjoyed a themed treasure hunt and fun-filled classes on how to make miners’s helmets.
