Driver banned for using her mobile

A WOMAN has been fined and banned for driving without insurance and using a mobile phone at the wheel.

Gemma Lee White, of Heol y Cwrt, North Cornelly, was spotted using the phone on October 12 last year.

The 25-year-old was also charged with driving without insurance and failing to produce necessary documentation.

White was convicted of the offences in her absence by Bridgend magistrates.

Vicki Walker, prosecuting, said police on patrol on Porthcawl Road, North Cornelly, received reports the driver of a Ford Focus was seen using a mobile phone.

When they stopped the vehicle, officers noticed there was a phone in the foot well.

White apologised, but was required to produce her documents at the police station.

She did not, and a summons was issued for her to attend court.

Jonathan David, defending, said: “Having been stopped by officers she accepts she was using the mobile phone.

“Unfortunately, she realised her certificate of insurance had run out the week before.

“She was almost too afraid to go to the police station and say that she was wrong.

“Matters have not been improved because she then received a summons. She put it to one side with the ‘I’ll deal with it in due course’ type attitude.”

White was fined a total of £350 fine and banned for two months. She must also pay £50 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
