A PENSIONER was told he was “too old” to be a poll clerk for the borough council election on May 1.
But after a phone call from the Gazette, Bridgend County Borough Council has now decided to allow 70-year-old Robert Bowker, of Heol Fair, Porthcawl, to work at the election and said the refusal was down to confusion.
Mr Bowker received an application form from BCBC for the position of a poll clerk after giving up his time to do the job in the past.
But, after sending back the form accepting the position, Mr Bowker then received a phone call from BCBC’s Electoral Department informing him he was too old to be considered for the post.
“The lady on the phone was very apologetic and told me it was now the council’s policy not to employ people over 70,” said Mr Bowker.
“When I asked why, I was told it was because of insurance. I am physically fit and able to carry out the work and I personally feel this is discrimination against age.
“I have sent a letter to the head of the Electoral Department expressing my disappointment and am waiting for a reply.
“It is basically casual labour for the council and I don’t know why they have chosen to impose this over-70 rule now.”
But things changed quickly after the Gazette contacted BCBC to ask why Mr Bowker’s application had been refused.
“I had a call from a lady at BCBC who said the insurance issue had been resolved and I can work at the election,” said Mr Bowker.
“Obviously I’m pleased and I will accept the offer.”
A BCBC spokesman said: “We are unsure as to how this confusion could have arisen, but in the event we have contacted Mr Bowker and have confirmed that he is welcome to work if he wishes to do so.”
