DRESSING OF THE MAYPOLE: Children from Roseheyworth School celebrated the season of new growth and welcomed the summer ahead as they enjoyed their ancestors’ May Day tradition of the dressing of the Maypole at an event held outside Abertillery’s Metropole. The weather held off as the children were put through their dancing paces by the Met’s dance practitioner, Hannah Mathieson and Jack-in-the-Green, a character who became particularly notorious in the 18th Century as the embodiment of all things growing. The children under the guidance of Nyree Davies, the Mets Visual Arts Practitioner, also made crowns fit for May Kings and Queens. Onlookers were delighted as the children brought traditional dance steps to life while they entwined and unwound ribbons around the maypole. Read
