An eventful day for Cheryl

A DAY of charity events in Abertillery has been organised in memory of Cheryl Morris and the good work she did for her ward during her time as a councillor.

Organising the event is Cheryl’s son Darren Morris and Mark Edwards, an Abertillery man who having known Cheryl all his life will also be running in the upcoming elections in the hope of carrying on her work.

Mr Edwards, who will be performing with his band High Spirits in the event, explained how he had intended to run alongside Cheryl and Norman Price as a team of three independents standing for the Cwmtillery seat.

After Cheryl sadly passed away last month, Norman Price decided he didn’t feel up to standing but Mark is going ahead, and will be an independent candidate in the council elections.

Mr Edwards, aged 39, said: “Cheryl passing away was a big blow.

“I’ve thought about it and decided I will be standing and am hoping to keep up the good work that Cheryl started.”

Speaking about the event that has been organised in Cheryl’s memory Mr Edwards said: “We don’t want people to forget all the good stuff that Cheryl did when she was alive.

On the afternoon of Saturday, April 19 a charity football match will be played between past and present players from Abertillery and Cwmtillery.

In the evening there will be a charity music event held at Abertillery Rugby club.

Performing will be High Spirits, local group DVD and vocalist Jaycee.

All money made on the day will be donated to Nevill Hall baby unit, a cause which was close to Cheryl’s heart after her granddaughter was born prematurely and treated there.

Cheryl’s husband Malcolm said: “We hope the people of Cwmtillery and Abertillery support both events and give generously as they always have in the past.

“Cheryl was proud and privileged to represent the people of Cwmtillery and always said, like her, you are simply the best.”

The Abertillery vs Cwmtillery match will kick off at 3pm at the Jim Owen field in Cwmtillery admission is £1.

Tickets for the evening show, starting at 7pm, are available from SM Ashes and Abertillery DIY centre or by ringing Malcolm Morris on 01495 216059. There will also be a raffle.
