David Hanson

Age: 50

Current job: Delyn MP. Minister of State at the Ministry for Justice with responsibility for the oversight of criminal law, prisons, probation and sentencing policy.

Advantages: As a Minister of State, he is at least one rung higher, with a distinct advantage over the other potential candidates. He has had a considerable amount of experience, including several ministerial jobs and a long stint as Tony Blair’s parliamentary private secretary. As a former Minister at the Northern Ireland Office, there has been speculation that he could combine the roles of Secretary of State for Wales and Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.

Disadvantages: He lacks charisma and does not have a high public profile.

Odds: 7-2
