THE Western Mail apologises for certain words used in a letter from Huw Lewis AM in yesterday's edition.
The Western Mail does not associate itself with such remarks.
We have issued an unconditional apology to Leanne Wood Plaid Cymru - The Party of Wales Assembly Member for South Wales Central.
SIR - A number of your correspondents (Letters Thursday July 21) argue that the Iraq situation augmented with Anglo-American foreign policies in the Middle East were the prime movers in the atrocities committed in London in the name of Islam.
This argument completely misses the point of Al-Qaeda, which has no interest in materialism but simply exists as a weapon to expel Western troops from Saudi Arabia.
So why do your correspondents fail to point out that there were many mindless Islamic terrorist attacks throughout the world resulting in many thousands of deaths prior to the situation in Iraq?
The point is that the people who perpetrate these attacks are not attempting to illustrate or counter social injustices in the Middle East in an effort to somehow improve the lot of their countrymen. On the contrary, these terrorists deplore the Western way of life, and would have us all become brothers of Islam.
Their misguided crusade is a spiritual rather than a material one and to attempt to link social injustice in Bradford to murder in central London is either a mistake on the part of your correspondents or a cynical ploy to obtain some form of political advantage from these inhuman actions.
Cllr GERALD CROCKER
SIR - People who stated that we should ignore the reasons behind the London bombings obviously do not care if there are further terrorist attacks. Maybe they are ignorant of the state terror imposed by US/UK foreign policy or wish to stop any criticism of atrocities carried out in the misnamed war on terrorism?
The reality is, war is terrorism with a bigger budget.
The slaughter of thousands of men, women and children in Iraq, by US/UK forces for them does not count, as such atrocities are outside their rather limited definition of terrorism.
Such victims can be ignored and racially dismissed by those who are deemed patriotic and cling to an imperialist Johnny foreigner attitude which is used as a sick rationalisation for war crimes.
Unless we examine in detail the reasons behind the London bombings we will never stop terrorism.
We should apply to ourselves the same standards we apply to others. For some people, this elementary moral principle is incomprehensible.
Bush and Blair, as Christians, should realise the hypocrite is the person who refuses to apply to himself the standards he applies to others.
Much of the commentary and discussion on the so-called war on terror is pure hypocrisy.
What is so frightening (and is reflective of how totalitarian our society has become) is that some people accept this as the norm.
Loss of jobs
SIR - Yet another announcement of job losses in Wales. This time 250 people being cast aside at Llangennech, a further 200 at BBC Wales. Although, all those budding unemployed Ioan Gruffudds and Catherine Zeta-Joneses out there polish up your smiles - "Valleywood" is on its way.
The Welsh Assembly Government in its recent TAN8 announcements, is ensuring security of employment for thousands of workers in Germany and Denmark by underpinning their failing wind power industries, industries described recently by Paul Golby, the chief executive of wind factory developers E.ON, as ones that would not exist without the massive subsidies of renewable obligation certificates.
Another round of job losses in Wales to be followed, I presume, by the massive blackouts recently experienced in industrial Spain because of wind energy failure.
There are 300bn tonnes of seawater entering and leaving the Bristol Channel twice in every 24-hour period, giving the opportunity of harnessing the second highest tidal phenomena in the world. The Welsh Assembly Government has had seven years to address this occurrence yet has completely ignored serious research and development into this totally reliable and natural form of renewable energy for a wholly unreliable form of generation which will put homes, businesses and, more importantly, our hospitals at great risk because the security of supply of wind power cannot be guaranteed
Women have a gape
SIR - Carolyn Hitt's claim that male drivers endlessly gawp at women pedestrians, but women drivers only have eyes for the road ahead (July 18), just didn't look right, so I conducted my own non-scientific experiment by adopting an Inspector Clouseau-like persona around local pedestrian crossings.
Men of all ages, in all sorts of vehicles - from a Porsche 911 via a white Ford Transit to a huge New Holland forage harvester - do indeed gawp at anything female which looks remotely beddable (alarmingly though, quite a few men appeared to be gawping at men, but that could have been a trick of the light).
Women drivers, below a certain age, also scan the male talent on parade, but never gawp - unless there's the male version of Carolyn Hitt hanging around, then they gape as enthusiastically as we men gawp.
The one huge difference is that where men accompany the gawp with "a grin, a beep or a pithy little witticism", the female remains stoically unseduced - unless there are two or more females together when different rules apply - but when women gape at Carl Hitt, and he acknowledges it with a winning smile, the female reflects the compliment.
Clearly, Carolyn, your sisters are evolving at a hot pace.
After all girls, what is this life if, full of care, you have no time to sit and stare - and quietly sing to yourselves "Hey good lookin', wotcha got cookin', how's about cookin' somethin' up with me?".
Wood fuel worries
SIR - While at the Royal Welsh Show I visited the Forestry Commission stand and encountered the Wood Energy display which promotes the burning of wood to fuel central heating/hot water systems.
The Forestry Commission claims that the burning of wood is completely sustainable and carbon-neutral - it also attracts generous grants and tax concessions.
This sounds wonderful until you view the larger picture.
The wind farm development at Cefn Croes involved the clear felling of about six square kilometres of forest, a proportion of which was immature.
This was in order to erect 39 wind turbines that produce little electricity, intermittently and save no carbon emissions.
The Forestry Commission has allowed extensive environmental damage to the Cefn Croes site which it holds in trust on behalf of the public.
TAN8 was published by the Welsh Assembly Government in final form last week and clearly the fate of the Brechfa Forest is now sealed - clear felling, wind turbines and mass environmental devastation.
Burning of wood releases stored carbon into the atmosphere and can only be balanced by disproportionate tree planting.
The Forestry Commission is destroying forests which absorb and lock up carbon in order to raise money to address their crisis of financial shortfall.
The actions of the Forestry Commission are causing a net increase in carbon emissions and are therefore in direct contradiction to the principles of the Kyoto Agreement.
When challenged, the Forest Commission representative responded by informing me it was carrying out Welsh Assembly Government policy and that promoting the sale of wood as a fuel was a revenue-raising exercise.
Are the Forestry Commission and the Welsh Assembly Government serving Wales well or merely destroying our precious environment on directions of Tony Blair and the Westminster Government?
SIR - It is clear that those who want sex education in schools are determined that it will continue, in spite of the clear evidence of its harm.
This teaching is of course, contraception, which few seem realise has already obliterated millions of our people and brought about the moral decline of a once great nation.
The great men and women we need so desperately now are simply not allowed to be born.
Also there is a tremendous rise in sexually transmitted infections.
Syphilis has risen by more than 1,000%.
However, the suffering involved does not move these people. They couldn't care less about it.
Pray God awaken us out of our apathy on these moral issues.
Churches wake up.
