CYSTITIS is a bacterial infection of the bladder and urinary tract.
It is more common in women than men because the passage from the bladder to the outside world is shorter, making it easier for bacteria to spread.
Symptoms depend on the severity of the infection but can include burning or discomfort on passing urine, passing frequent, small amounts, low abdominal pain or backache and cloudy or unpleasant-smelling urine. It is estimated that 50% of women experience symptoms at some time in their lives.
Drinking cranberry juice on a regular basis can help. Studies suggest 300ml daily can almost halve the risk of developing cystitis.
There is however another plant that might help called Uva-ursi or bearberry.
With peculiarly shaped flowers, which some say resemble the shape of the bladder, Uva-ursi is recognised for its antiseptic, cleansing action in the kidneys and bladder.
The A Vogel Uva-ursi Complex from Bioforce combines Uva-ursi and the infection-fighting herb echinacea.
It can be used both as a preventive (dilute 15 drops once a day in a little water) or to help fight an existing infection where the dose is increased to two to three times daily.
If an infection is present, a diet rich in fruit and vegetables should reduce the acidity of your urine and drinking plenty of water will help to flush the infection through.
Medical advice should be sought if there is any doubt as to the nature of the problem. If symptoms persist, do not improve within 48 hours or are recurrent, or if there is blood in the urine or a fever is present, you must consult your GP.
