College wins top awards nomination

COLEG Sir Gar’s fashion and textiles department in Carmarthenshire has been short-listed for an award for its vocational training.

Based at the college’s West Wales School of the Arts in Jobs Well, the school has been entered into the final of the Fforwm 2008 awards, competing in the category of developing skills through vocational study. Fforwm is an educational charity, representing further education across the whole of Wales.

Staff at the college have worked consistently hard to maintain and improve the quality of training provided, and the department represents Wales on Skillfast UK’s lead network provider group.

The college is also the only further education establishment to sit on the Welsh Assembly Government’s Textile Wales group, which aims to draw upon key industry figures, and education and government departments to develop the garment and textile sector across Wales.

Caroline Thraves, head of fashion, said: “The department’s strategy is to continuously improve upon its performance and to lead the way within Wales, the UK and Europe to develop new and innovative vocational opportunities for learners.”
