Ten proves to be the perfect start for new class

WITH just 10 pupils this class is one of the smallest in Wales.

The Welsh starter class is one of three which opened in Cardiff this academic year on the sites of English primaries. Named Cefn Coed class, it can be found on the site of Holy Family Catholic Primary in Beechley Drive, Pentrebane, just yards from Ysgol Coed Y Gof with which it is linked.

The class is headed by teacher Penny Hughes-Jones with support from teaching assistants.

Pupils have lunch at the same time as pupils from Holy Family but have a separate dining table. They use the playground at different times and will soon have a new uniform. The aim of these starter classes is to meet record demand for places in Welsh-medium schools before permanent schools open as part of the reorganisation. It is now estimated these classes will remain open for three years – an extra year than originally planned.

Ceri Boulton, mum of pupil Jac, said: “The school is brilliant. Jac is making really good progress and that is down to the small class and wonderful staff.”

Making the most of the shared site, pupils have their own forest school, which is an international initiative aimed at helping youngsters gain a love of the great outdoors.

Ms Hughes-Jones said: “We have embraced the foundation phase philosophy and offer a child-centred approach to learning encouraging practical and hands-on opportunities for children to explore, investigate and experiment all areas of learning.

“Forest school develops children’s understanding and respect for the environment. It enables the children to develop self-confidence, self-esteem and independence. Once a week the children spend a morning at Forest School where they participate in fun learning, play games and have refreshments too. It is always the favourite day of the week.”

Mike Hayes, who as headteacher of neighbouring Ysgol Coed Y Gof also heads the starter class, said: “So far it has worked really well with good links with pupils on both sites. In terms of building on this success we are in the process of appointing a governing body.”
