THOUSANDS of schoolchildren in Wales will be eating a Fairtrade school meal to mark Fairtrade Fortnight.
A special school dinner made entirely with fairly traded ingredients is taking place on March 6 at all primary schools in the north of Ceredigion.
Cocoa producers from Ghana who produce cocoa for Divine Chocolate will also be at a Fairtrade schools conference for 11 schools at Penglais school in Aberystwyth on March 4.
The North Ceredigion Fairtrade Schools Project involves nine schools working together to become Fairtrade Schools this academic year.
Diane Isenberg, co-ordinator of the North Ceredigion Fairtrade Schools Project, said 10,000 primary school children would be eating the fairly traded meal on March 6.
“It is wonderful to see so many schools participating in the Fairtrade dinner, and in the cocoa producer’s conference,” she said.
“It is clear that Fairtrade is something about which young people in Ceredigion are very passionate, and it is so exciting to see them taking an active interest in where their food comes from and in ensuring those who produce it get a fair deal.”
Welshpool High School is also holding a range of Fairtrade activities over the next two weeks. Catering manager Jane Williams is planning two Fairtrade meals – the school already sells Fairtrade juice and cereal bars.
