Enjoy your festive viewing
WHEN I was a kid, I knew that the countdown for Christmas had begun when my mother came home from the post office-cum- newsagent with the double issue of a TV magazine.
There’d be snow – and invariably Noel Edmunds – on the front, and I assumed that this glossy treat landing on my lap meant that I could start getting excited. Yeah, like I needed an excuse! I’d pour over it with a thick red marker and draw circles around what I wanted to see, in the same way that the movies told me people in New York did when they were looking for an apartment.
I was so easily swayed in those days. Now, as I make a Christmas TV-themed magazine of my very own – grown up or what? – I’ve picked out shows which are on over the festive period that I hope you’ll like too.
Politically, it would be correct to say that I’m looking forward to the Christmas Day edition of Doctor Who. But I’m genuinely interested in seeing Kylie snog David Tennant while wearing knee-high boots and an apron.
Those bright sparks at the Beeb have also put Maria winner Connie Cox with new Joseph, the curly-haired wonder that is Lee Mead. The naysayers might wonder if this is just another attempt to wring a little more from the proverbial cash cow, but the event looks set to be a series of wonderful performances from some truly gifted stage entertainers, and at the end of the day, who really cares?
With this much talent on display you can’t fail but to be impressed.
It’s an enjoyable way to pass the hours before Santa comes sneaking down the chimney and if you’re really lucky, he might just leave you behind a copy of Connie or Lee’s album. Yes, I was joking.
Anyway, however you spend it and whatever you watch, here’s hoping your festive viewing won’t be full of disappointing repeats but new and entertaining treats.
