TWO major developments at Rhoose Point have been put on hold amid continuing concerns about drainage at the massive housing estate.
Vale councillors have deferred a decision on a plan by Newport-based Fourgreen Development Ltd to build shops and flats in the north-western corner of Rhoose Point, close to the Vale of Glamorgan Railway line and Torbay Terrace.
They have also deferred a decision on a plan by Cofton Ltd to build 54 houses, a pub and a medical centre on land to the south side of the railway line at Rhoose Point.
Vale planners recommended approval of both plans, but councillors put them on hold so that further talks could be held on the drainage concerns.
Welsh Water has refused to officially adopt the drainage system until various improvements have been carried out to allow it to cope with the increased demand.
Local councillor Jeff James said: “Residents of Rhoose Point who have found that land drains were laid under their plots, are also concerned that these proposed developments would interfere with, and have an adverse impact on the land drain. Their fears need to be taken into account.
“While I appreciate that there are many benefits from such facilities as a pub and medical centre it is time that Cofton and the Vale council sorted out the issues that are holding up the adoption of both the drainage and the highways.”
A spokesman for Welsh Water said it had informed Cofton of the work needed and would be holding further talks with the company.
