Battle of the villages to land accolade

VILLAGERS throughout South Wales are preparing to do battle in this year’s Calor Village of the Year.

Last year, Lawrenny in Pembrokeshire was crowned the best village in Wales.

The new-look Calor competition has just been launched for 2008 with three regions North Wales, Mid and West Wales, and South Wales, replacing the previous North and South split.

This allows villagers in South Wales more chances to scoop prize money.

The competition is open to all rural village communities with a population of 5,000 and under with prizes for people, business, environment and communications categories.

By entering the competition, villages have the opportunity to share thousands of pounds to use for their community.

Simon White, from One Voice Wales, joint organiser of the competition, said: “This competition celebrates communities which act locally to improve their village life and three villages in South Wales will be shortlisted for a visit from a team of independent judges who will decide on a winner for each region.”
