A DISABLED child is being used to trick Vale businesses into contributing towards a special computer for the youngster.
Trading standards officers have alerted local businessmen and women to the “disgraceful” scam. The council has received several reports of a man, accompanied by a physically disabled child, visiting businesses and asking for contributions to buy a computer for the youngster, with any donation entitling the person to entry in a free prize draw. The person is then informed that they have won a day’s use of a luxury car but that they have to pay £200 to cover fuel and insurance. The prize doesn’t materialise.
Kate Palmer, the Vale’s consumer education officer, said: “Anyone approaching a business asking for cash should be treated with caution and suspicion.” Ms Palmer says traders should keep CCTV footage of any incident.
“We urge people to beware of such cons, and donate only to registered charities, which they know will actually pass on the proceeds to those in need.”
