ACTION to protect the Penarth Leisure Centre from the “significant impact” of the International Sports Village has been welcomed by Plaid Cymru AM, Christ Franks.
Vale councillors met yesterday amid mounting concern that the Sports Village could draw people away from the nearby leisure centre.
In his report to councillors, Rob Quick, the Vale’s director of environmental and economic regeneration, said: “The potential impact of the International Sports Village is very significant. The pool and leisure facilities are impressive and likely to attract a lot of customers.”
A campaign has been launched to promote the leisure centre and there has been reviews of opening hours and facilities offered at the centre.
Mr Quick said: “It is possible that a number of swimming galas will transfer to the sports village, but the presence of the sports hall at Penarth means the leisure centre will continue to attract certain events.”
Mr Franks, who is also a Vale councillor, said: “There is a serious risk that the Sports Village will undermine the financial position of the Penarth centre. The leisure centre is much valued by local residents and we must not see the building become rundown.”
