Low-speed zones to improve road safety

PUPILS and parents can expect a safer journey to school with a plan to introduce more 20mph zones in Caerphilly county.

Seven more low-speed zones are in the pipeline. The Welsh Assembly Government’s strategy for road safety in 2003 identified the need for more 20mph zones and ensuring only such speeds were the norm in new residential developments.

Anthony O’Sullivan, Caerphilly’s environmental director, said: “The fundamental purpose of a 20mph zone is to reduce vehicle speeds to improve safety and encourage appropriate safe movement within the community.”

When money allows, he said a number of outstanding requests from schools for 20mph zones will be considered, including Bryn Awel Primary, Rhymney, Maesycwmmer, Bedwas junior and Blackwood comprehensive.
