Switch on to ‘Pengam lights’ story tales

THE public are being invited to have their say on a new piece of public art.

An artist has been commissioned to create work on the site of the old welfare ground in Glan Y Nant, Caerphilly – known locally as Pengam lights – and he wants to hear from locals, especially the older residents, about what would be suitable.

Thousands of motorists pass the Pengam lights area every day so whatever goes on there is bound to be a talking point. Artist Pete Codlin will design, build and install the structure and he is looking to consult the local community in order to develop a theme for the piece.

He will hold workshops with pupils from local schools later this month and he is also hoping to hold further sessions with the wider community. A ‘story circle’ session will take place on January 23, in Glan Y Nant Memorial Hall at 5.30pm, for people to share stories about the area.

A Caerphilly council spokesman said: “We are interested in hearing from people who are long-term residents of the area or have memories of the welfare grounds.”
