Cameras up from handful to 129

THE number of CCTV cameras in one South Wales town centre has risen from 13 to 129 in a bid to fight crime.

The level of surveillance in Caerphilly town centre has brought a string of offenders to book – and seen Caerphilly council gain a British Security Silver award.

Councillor David Poole, Cabinet member for the environment, said: “It is helping in the fight against crime and anti-social behaviour. It provides good evidence, and depending on what the problem is, can eliminate some things from our communities.”

The eyes-in-the-sky are one of the main tools employed by Safer Caerphilly County Borough, the multi-agency partnership that works to reduce crime.
