’common denominator is alcohol’

CHRISTMAS and New Year is one of the times during the year when domestic violence incidents increase.

Detective Inspector Chris Mullane, of Cardiff‘ Central Police Station’s public protection unit, said: “Most people can see the common denominator between these times is alcohol.

“That’s not the reason but it increases the amounts of reported incidents.

“I’ve seen increases in domestic violence since last Christmas.

“It’s awareness that has gone up. People have more confidence in the criminal justice system, so reporting has gone up.”

DI Mullane said specialist officers are on call over the festive period to support front line officers in dealing with domestic violence calls.

He added: “We’ve also contacted the victims of domestic violence to reassure them and give them advice on how to stay safe.

“We’ve an excellent record in cutting repeat victims of domestic violence from 35 per cent to 10 per cent.

“We will aggressively pursue domestic violence offenders with the full weight of the law.”
