COUNTY delighted the couple of hundred fans who made the long journey to East Anglia last night as they set themselves up for a final push for a play-off place.
Newport had to work hard to break down the Cambridge outfit in confident mood after a 5-1 defeat of Weston on Saturday.
But with man-of-the-match Andy Gurney inspiring them again, they held a vital interval lead. The former Swansea midfielder floated in a 43rd-minute free-kick which top-scorer Charlie Griffin headed home.
County had to weather some Cambridge pressure early in the second half, with Glyn Thompson making a fine save to stop Michael Gash from scoring. But the visitors were always a threat and Jason Bowen hit the bar after 61 minutes, before Gurney ended all doubt with a thumping shot from outside the area in the 71st minute.
County now face second-placed Eastbourne on Saturday with the play-offs well within reach.
