County stay in play-off contention

NEWPORT County catapulted themselves back into the play-off reckoning with a crucial win at Cambridge last night.

Goals in each half from Charlie Griffin and Andy Gurney helped County collect what could prove to be three invaluable points for the Exiles.

For the result saw the visitors jump three places in the Blue Square South Conference table – and they’re only outside the play-off positions on goal difference.

The Welsh side are level on points with fifth-placed Bath City, who were 3-1 winners over Thurrock last night, but with a game in hand.

Newport now face a vital home game against second-placed Eastbourne Borough on Saturday, where another win would improve their position still further.
