Shephard demands Martyrs go distance

MERTHYR Tydfil aim to cast themselves in the role of party-poopers tomorrow.

The Martyrs close their Southern Premier Division programme at home to Kings Lynn, who need a win to clinch the title.

And while Merthyr’s inconsistency has left them in mid-table, manager Garry Shephard will not field an end-of-season weakened side.

“It would be unfair on the other clubs in the league to play a few of the youngsters,” said Shephard.

“Besides, I would like to pit our wits against a very good Kings Lynn side to see how far we have come this season.

“Kings Lynn will be the yardstick for us. While I have learned a lot this season, in charge for the first time, we need to improve ourselves and everything around us.

“As long as the players give their best tomorrow and don’t just die out there, then I will be happy.

“We are top of the form guide, it’s a pity we were not top of the league.

“We will take a bit of break, start afresh next season and improve on this campaign, which has been eventful to say the least.”
