Steins brace lifts Martyrs

Hitchin 1-3 Merhtyr Tydfil

MERTHYR chalked up their highest away victory of the season at Hitchin who, despite the defeat, were assured of their place in the Southern League Premier Division next season courtesy of results elsewhere.

Craig Steins grabbed a goal in each half to take his season's tally to 17, while Shane Dawe got Merthyr's other goal just before half-time.

Steins’ opener on 26 minutes was cancelled out by Paul Barnes just four minutes later, before Dawe restored the lead two minutes before the break.

However, Steins settled the matter 17 minutes from time, effectively snuffing out the home side's resistence.

The win sees Merthyr in good form for the visit of Kings Lynn, who will take the league title if they beat the Martyrs next Saturday.
